Research Writing Retreat 2026

The Humanities Research Fellowship for the Study of the Arab World invites distinguished scholars to apply for its Research Writing Retreat, to be held in Winter 2026 and Spring 2026. Taking place at NYU Abu Dhabi, this two-week retreat aims to foster a scholarly community for up to 8 scholars from around the world and to advance research projects in all areas of the Humanities related to the study of the Arab world, its rich literature and history, its cultural and artistic heritage, and its manifold connections with other cultures. Scholars will have the opportunity to work on any type of academic writing including a research article, book manuscript, chapter or essay.

 

Applicants may indicate their preferred term (Winter or Spring) and we will do our best to accommodate these preferences. Final placements will be determined based on cohort availability and budget confirmation.

 

The fellowship will cover the scholar’s travel costs to and from Abu Dhabi, accommodation and meals for the duration of the two-week retreat.

 

Expectations during the residency:

  • Three groups dinners with fellow scholars and select NYUAD faculty
  • One lunch meeting with NYUAD faculty or HRF Research Fellow
  • One research panel presentation

  • Winter 2026: January 12-23, 2026
  • Spring 2026: May 11-23, 2026

The Humanities Research Fellowship for the Study of the Arab World program creates an energetic, multi-faceted research environment for the Humanities and the study of the Arab world. Fellows contribute to NYUAD’s intellectual community through research and research-related activities, including sharing their work in progress with NYUAD faculty and students and participating in scholarly networks engaged in ongoing research. Qualifications

We welcome applications from international senior scholars with outstanding scholarly accomplishments and mid-career scholars with strong publication records and exceptional scholarly promise.

Application Instructions

Applications will not be considered complete without all required documentation including the Short Answer form.

Applicants should submit the following materials in English:

  • CV – up to 4 pages
  • Research Proposal – 3-5 pages (including references) outlining:
    • Key arguments, themes, and significance to the field
    • Methods, work plan, and expected final product
    • Plans for dissemination of research outcomes
  • Short Answer Form – including:
    • Project abstract
    • Relevance of the UAE and/or the NYUAD Humanities Research Fellowship residency
