JOB SUMMARY
The Academic Writing Coach supports undergraduate and graduate students in developing clear, ethical, and effective communication across a range of academic disciplines. Writing support will include essays, research papers, lab reports, discussion posts, job applications, and digital presentations. The Coach provides guidance on citation practices, academic integrity, and the thoughtful use of tools like generative AI. They also design and lead orientations and interactive workshops focused on writing, research, and information literacy. The Academic Coach will work primarily from Hatch Learning Commons in the Division of Student Engagement and Academic Resources.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Work with students to improve their English writing proficiency
- Develop outreach programs for students to improve writing skills
- Tutor students (in person or via Zoom) individually or in small groups in college-level writing skills, APA style, test-taking strategies, and study skills that improve their written communication and academic success
- Conduct in-class presentations and academic skill reviews
- Provide guidance on the ethical and effective use of emerging technologies, including generative AI, in academic writing
- Build connections with faculty and become familiar with university courses for targeted support offerings
- Help oversee and train Peer Writing Tutors
- Design and lead orientations and workshops on writing and research-related topics through the Hatch Learning Commons
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain accurate student information, including projecting, assessing, and reporting on student performance
- Prioritize student contact so that most at-risk students receive timely support
- Establish rapport and build trusting relationships with a diverse student population by delivering personalized, constructive, engaging, and motivating coaching sessions
- Organize and carry out special projects or workshops relating to writing and reading skills involving students, staff, or the broader student body
- Work with students who demonstrate a wide range of skills, motivation levels, and educational goals
- Work with minimal supervision, accept a flexible schedule (including evenings or alternate hours as needed), and perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements:
- Master’s degree in English, Social Sciences, or related field required, Doctoral degree preferred.
- 1-3 years of experience as a tutor or instructor in a related field of study required.
- Experience teaching or tutoring ELL/ESL students preferred.
- Mastery of APA style required.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.
- General knowledge of the University’s mission, purpose, and goals, as well as the role of an Academic Coach in achieving those.
