Admission Counselor

The Admission Counselor is responsible for recruiting, counseling, and assisting prospective students and their families in the admission process, managing geographic territories to meet recruitment goals, carrying out daily operations of the office, and development of, and contributions towards projects as assigned.  This individual reports to the Director of Admission.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct market research, cultivate and manage counselor and high school relationships, and maintain correspondence with students and families.
  • Coordinate recruitment activities for an assigned recruitment territory, including high school visits, recruitment events, student interviews and meetings, alumni gatherings, email, text and phone campaigns, and other recruitment activities to meet application and enrollment goals for the assigned recruitment territory.
  • Contribute to projects and special events as assigned, developing an action plan, and implementing activities required by the project, including electronic and print communication, virtual resources, volunteer coordination, and delegation of tasks to other staff members.
  • Conduct up to eight weeks of recruitment travel in the fall and up to four weeks in the spring.  Responsible for planning and preparation for travel.
  • Meet with prospective students and their families for individual and group information sessions on a daily basis.  Counsel students and families on the admission and financial aid process.  Articulate the features and benefits of Centre’s top-tier, nationally ranked liberal arts and sciences education and residential experience.
  • Regularly offer presentations to guests before guided campus tours.
  • Attend open houses and other on-and-off campus events for admission.
  •  Participate in occasional weekend information sessions for campus visitors.
  •  Read and evaluate applications for admission and scholarship consideration.
  • Recommend appropriate admission decision for admission candidates and participate in scholarship evaluation committee meetings as required.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the counseling staff and supervisor.
  • Maintain professionalism, build, cultivate, and maintain strong relationships with members of the Centre College community, high school counselors, community-based organizations, and other constituencies with which the admissions office interacts.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation for and sensitivity to a diverse academic community, fostering an inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff from a variety of social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and related experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are required, as well as organizational skills.
  • Candidates should understand the nature and purpose of a residential liberal arts and sciences experience.
  • Basic computer skills needed to utilize admission specific software, spreadsheets and calendars, and virtual resources.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team is important.
  • Empathy and humor are crucial.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
