As the leader of the College’s global programs, the Director of Centre Global (CG) oversees one of the top study abroad/away programs in the United States, with programs in 13 different countries spanning five continents. In addition, faculty design and lead more than a dozen short-term courses away or abroad each year. Global engagement is embedded in Centre’s culture, and approximately 80% of students study abroad or away at least once during their college career. CG also supports and provides programming for international students, which make up about 5% of the student body. The Director of Centre Global reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and is advised by the Off-Campus Programs Committee (OCPC).
Competencies
- Business acumen to handle a large and complex budget (international invoicing, financial aid);
- Effective and regular communication with on-campus and off-campus constituencies (faculty, students, and others), including partnering institutions;
- Compliance management, including updating and enforcing institutional policies, familiarity with international laws affecting U.S. students abroad, U.S. State Department policies, and other regulations;
- Understanding of best practices in risk management and crisis response;
- Program assessment through regular data collection (surveys, evaluations, interviews), site visits, and analysis to guide ongoing improvement of domestic and international programs;
- Ability to remain calm under pressure when dealing with complex situations;
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the CG team (three other full-time members) and programs, providing and receiving constructive feedback and setting growth goals and plans for all team members;
- Advocate for the CG with data-informed requests for necessary resources, keeping the senior administration and OCPC up-to-date on programs and issues that arise;
- Support the institution’s objectives in diversity, equity, and inclusion, including intercultural competencies for career readiness.
- Train, advise, and support faculty and staff to lead enriching off-campus study experiences, including establishing curricular and experiential learning goals.
- Develop and oversee new programs based on needs analysis.
- Help internationalize the College’s curriculum. Engage constituencies in connecting the scholarship of international education to its practice and embed study abroad and away coursework in existing general education and curricular requirements;
- Pursue ongoing professional development through participation in NAFSA and The Forum for Education Abroad, as well as maintain a strong network of professional colleagues across the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS);
- Demonstrate an appreciation for and sensitivity to a diverse academic community, fostering an inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff from a variety of social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
Education and Preferred Experience
- Master’s degree or higher in applicable field.
- Minimum of five years of relevant experience in international-education administration
Knowledge and Skills
- Fluency with professional standards and best practices for international education.
- Professional Certification from The Forum for Education Abroad. Can complete before starting the position or within the first 2 years.
- Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills with positive temperament.
- Advanced intercultural awareness and competencies.
- Proficiency in risk management in global and domestic off-campus study.
Physical Requirements:
- Limited pushing, pulling, lifting. Lifting would not exceed 20 lbs.
- Mobility on campus necessary.
