Assistant Club Coach, Men’s Rugby

Under the direction of the Head Coach, Club Men’s Rugby, the Forward’s coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in the development of Forwards on the team. This includes assisting in the creation of practice plans, organization of drills, and sharing technical experience with players. The Forwards coach will also play a role in the development of younger, less experienced players, as time permits.

The ideal candidate has multiple years of playing experience at the collegiate level at a minimum, preferably in the tight five. Coaching experience is a plus but not required.

 

 

Essential Duties

  • The coach is required to be present during all practices and games, ensuring all safety standards and guidelines as defined by USA Rugby, National Collegiate Rugby (NCR), and Bentley University.
  • Attend required league meetings.
  • Attend Away games and post-season tournaments that may require multiple overnight stays.
  • Make appropriate decisions regarding the safety and playing ability of team members.
  • Work with the Head Coach and Back’s coach at try-outs to select the team and then create the lineup for each game.
  • Represent Bentley University in a manner that is consistent with the mission of the University.
  • Be available to team members to counsel on matters relating to Club Men’s Rugby, and team morale.
  • Meet as needed with the appropriate Athletic Department Administrative staff on things pertaining to Club Men’s Rugby.
  • Work with our Competitive Sports Athletic Trainer to ensure there is clear communication and understanding of concussion, rehab, and return to play protocols.
  • Assist with recruitment and awareness efforts with regards to Club Men’s Rugby as needed. This includes, but is not limited to, information sessions, university events, community outreach, and related support throughout the season/offseason

 

Other Duties

  • Management of student participants by reinforcing their commitment to academic performance while balancing participation on an extracurricular team.
  • Manage the balance of individual team needs and time away from campus for practices and games.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years prior coaching or playing experience with a competitive Rugby Program, specifically within the tight five of the forward pack.
  • Demonstrated leadership and coaching abilities with a commitment to developing and maintaining a positive and productive playing environment.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups. Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • First Aid and CPR training is required.
  • Experience working with an undergraduate population or traditional university-aged students
  • Must hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted United States driver’s license, with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley’s insurance carrier.

 

Work Environment

  • Coach must be present at all practices and games, of which could occur in afternoons and evenings weekdays, and weekends.
  • Job will entail two practices per week and 1 match and/or tournament per week once season begins.
  • Work approximately 6-10 hours per week (more time allocated for travel to away games as needed) between the months of late August through April
  • Coach must be present at all practices and games and must effectively demonstrate and instruct techniques and skill to team members.

 

Physical Requirements

Physical skill and effort are very important for this position. Every practice involves physical effort whether it be demonstrating a skill or conditioning.
